Meet Monica from Monica Nichols Photography
Where did you draw inspiration for your session?
I wanted to submit this senior session that I am personally so proud of. Living in south Florida, it’s a little harder to find older barns/buildings with that awesome vintage look. We ventured to North Carolina over the summer and I caught a glimpse of the barn in this session and almost exploded with excitement. Come to find out, it was the barn used in the Days of Thunder movie (woot woot!). North Carolina is also abundant with beautiful fields of tall grass and flowers (again, hard to find one of those in south Florida that doesn’t have a NO TRESPASSING sign on it). I absolutely loved capturing Kellie’s sweet smile and feel like the field truly brings out her pure and truly endearing personality.
What is the best piece of advice you have been given in your career or that you would like to give to others?
If I had to give any advice to a new or aspiring photographer, it would be to always believe in yourself. I struggled with this for such a long time. I would look at blogs and websites of other photographers and feel so inadequate and worried that I wasn’t cut out to be a great photographer. I’m still growing and learning, but I’m content and feel that I have found that confidence that I once lacked. It does take time, but you have to be strong and believe that you will “get there.”
We would love to hear how you got started in photography and a little about you and your business!
Yes…I’ll admit, I was one of those moms that bought a better camera after my kids were born and just took a gazillion pictures of them. I simply enjoyed (and still enjoy) taking pictures. I had always had a love for beautiful photography, but never thought that I could actually become a “real” photographer. I can honestly say that I probably spent my college education in the wrong major. I had just finished my Masters degree in Accounting and after much hesitation and uncertainty, my husband convinced me to start my own photography business. It was scary and exciting at the same time. I threw myself in full force and quickly discovered that there was so much to learn. I have spent countless hours learning, networking, and trying to perfect my art. I can’t say that my business has “taken off” and that I’m completely booked all the time, but I CAN say that the past two and half years have been amazing. I have some of the best clients and truly enjoy meeting and working with new people all the time. Some of the moments that I have had the opportunity to capture are simply priceless.
I’m a natural light photographer based out of West Palm Beach, Florida. I specialize in families, children, and seniors, but my true love is capturing newborns. I also free lance as a hospital newborn photographer.
