If you are anything like me, there are times you find yourself filled with doubt. Wondering if you’re going to succeed in this business, or if will you end up being one of the many that flounder and eventually close up shop.
I know I get these pesky little doubts from time to time…
Am I talented enough, capable enough? Do I have the tools, the stamina, the funds to even make this dream a reality?
Perfectionism, it’s a bitch.
Doubt can creep its way in, it’s our job to stomp it back out!
I get it, it’s not easy to see photographers more established in their business, with their sweet studios, and their seemingly endless amount of success. I know I find myself comparing my own success at times… mistake. Huge, huge mistake.
Your success is a measure all your own.
I’m sure you’ve heard the line - “One of the reasons we struggle with insecurity is because we’re comparing our ‘behind the scenes’ with everybody else’s ‘highlight reel.’”
Have you ever posted a photo that wasn’t your BEST from a session? Um, no, who would do that?! Everyone wants to highlight his or her best work. So while you are filling yourself with doubts of your own capabilities, and lusting over the photographer down the street’s amazing photos… remember that they too have some less than stellar, straight to the trash moments.
Doubt, bitch though it is, has its place, and can be used in positive ways.
Make doubt your bitch lover!
When you feel it sneaking it’s way in… think of it as your subconscious sending you a reminder to check in on your progress. Take a moment to reflect on your business… are you where YOU want to be? Notice I didn’t say, ‘Are you as successful as your biggest competition’… FORGET about everyone else, YOU are your ONLY competition. Have you grown as a photographer, as a business person? I can almost promise you that your answer will be yes. It’s easy to lose sight of how far we’ve come when we are constantly reaching for bigger goals.
Doubt is simply a reminder to pat yourself on the back for all you’ve done so far, and to fuel the fire to be able to reach farther.
So the next time you find yourself filled with doubt… don’t fret, reflect.
